American Idol updates the 50s with help from Barry curlio
 2006-03-21 23:06:49
Television Barry Manilow helped the contestants on American Idol update 50s songs tonight. They must have liked having Barry on the show last year (year before last, my mistake), and honestly I think he helps out the contestants by working with them. Randy Jackson was hopeful that tonight's songs might be a little easier for the contestants. Paula Abdul said tonight would be stellar. Ryan Seacrest asked Simon Cowell about picking the three best singers already, wondering if it was too early. Simon's answer was a simple "no." Barry was picked to help out with the 50s week because he has a new album out, covering classic 50s songs.

Mandisa kicked off the show with "I Don't Hurt Anymore." She and Barry had a slight disagreement over how the song would begin. Mandisa wanted the song to start soft, while Barry wanted it to start big. He admitted that she was right. He also said that she has no range, which I presumed meant there is nothing she couldn't do. That's high praise coming from two stars now, Barry this week and Stevie last week. Her performance was wonderful. Randy was a little speechless. He said it was a classy, great, amazing way to start the show. Paula called her a thoroughbred, which I'm sure our Fredereek will have loads of fun with. Simon thought it was a very sexy performance, and that it sounded like a stripper song. He absolutely loved it.

Barry thought that Bucky Covington would have a ball singing "Oh Boy" and it looked like he did. Dusty and my niece Megan weren't fond of the performance, but I can see Bucky doing well as a country rock star. Randy thought it was a great song choice and particularly loved the mic technique. He liked that the old Bucky hair was back, but didn't think it was the best vocal. Paula said it was the perfect choice for Bucky. Simon however thought it was a karaoke performance. Ryan Seacrest asked the judges what Bucky can do to improve, Randy told him to give his best vocal performance.

Barry was worried about Paris Bennett doing "Fever" because it's a mature song, but she has such depth and power in her voice it was shocking. She's got a great voice, but for some reason I was bored during her performance. I don't know why, I love her voice, but it was like part of her perky personality was missing. Randy wasn't fond of the beginning, but loved the rest of the song. Paula forgot that Paris was only 17 with some of the moves she was doing. Simon thought she has the perfect voice for that type of song. Paris said after her performance that while she did perform this song during the Hollywood round, this version allowed her to be in the 50s.

Chris Daughtry chose "I Walk the Line" because the lyrics have relevance for him. Barry hadn't heard anything like Chris' version before. Randy said that Chris always has a good time onstage, but it's not the best vocal since he's been on the show. He added the standard "made it your own" and "you know who you are" stuff. Paula also tossed out the "true to yourself" line. Simon agreed with Randy that it wasn't the best vocal, but went on about how Chris does his own thing, or something like that. Honestly, I dozed off, something about hearing the same lines over and over and over.

Katharine McPhee was a little hurt because Simon didn't remember her name when he was being interviewed by his girlfriend. She didn't let that effect her performance of "Come Rain or Come Shine." Barry told her to make sure she sang the song to someone. Honestly her vocals were great, but it was forgettable and boring. Randy said the vocals weren't his favorite from her, but she took a difficult song and worked it out. Paula told Kat that only she could pull off an Ella Fitzgerald song. Simon told her she turned into a star tonight. It was like watching a real seasoned performer.

Barry thought Taylor Hicks had one of the greatest voices he's ever heard. He didn't like the ending of Taylor's pick, "Not Fade Away" so they had to cut it up a bit. Honestly this was the first time I've really liked Taylor. To me it seemed that it was more about the vocals than the "WOO" moments. The judges weren't as fond of it though. Randy thought that he was having a blast, but it wasn't vocally challenging. Paula said that someone should shoot the performance and make an exercise video out of it. Simon said that it was a complete mess, lioke some hideous party performance. He and Paula had a slight argument that included Simon telling Paula she was talking complete rubbish. He reminded her that it was a singing competition, not a dancing competition.

Lisa Tucker talked about being in the bottom three last week. She said that she tries to do her best every week, and that's all she can do. Barry didn't think Lisa should know "Why do fools fall in Love" as well as she does. He called her a powerhouse. To me, it seemed like she was having a hard time with the timing at the beginning, but the ending was great. Randy loved that she kept herself young and perky, but missed the "oh my god" performance. Paula liked her youthfulness. Simon said it was okay, but he has felt tonight at times like he was trapped in some sort of high school musical.

If Simon is trapped in a high school musical, Kevin Covais is definitely the school nerd. He and Barry thought his choice of "When I fall in Love" was appropriate for him. It was sweet, but the vocals were just - attrocious. Randy thought he did a pretty good job, with just a couple of little pitch problems. Paula told Kevin that it takes a lot of courage to start singing that song 10 feet away from Simon. She said he had "moxy." Simon likes Kevin because he takes his comments well. He didn't think it was the best version of the song he heard, but Kevin knows who his audience well and they will love it.

Elliott Yamin wasn't fond of Barry before he met him, but afterwards he was a true Barry Fanilow. Barry told Elliott to stop singing the words but to crawl into the meaning of the song "Teach Me Tonight." I wasn't fond of his performance this week, and I thought the tie with the untucked shirt was rather dorky. Randy thought it was rough in a couple of spots, but it was a difficult song to sing. Paula had goosebumps, and Simon thought it was fantastic.

Kellie Pickler didn't know what to do this week until her Grandpa told her to do a Patsy Cline song. Barry wasn't familiar with "Walking After Midnight" as he's from Brookly, so he doesn't know much about country music. Her heart didn't seem to be in the performance, or it didn't translate over my TV very well. I also thought her vocals weren't great, but then again, Patsy is holy in the Country genre. All three judges liked the performance, which really makes me wonder what didn't come across the TV very well.

In standard American Idol fashion, they saved the best for last. Ace Young chose to perform one of my favorite songs of all time, "In the Still of the Night." Barry didn't really know what to make of Ace's jazzy version of the song. He wanted to torture all of the viewing audience by having Ace end the song with the falsetto. Ace brings new meaning to awesomely bad vocals. Dusty and I have coined a new word just for the occasion - Ace's vocals were Supercalifragilisticexpialattrocious! Once again the judges must have heard something we didn't, because Randy and Paula liked the performance. Randy liked that Ace brought something different and fresh to the song. Paula counted the "Ace will you marry me" signs, they totaled 34. Simon didn't like the best vocal, but that didn't matter much, because it was one of his stronger performances.

My top three is easy:

The bottom three is also rather easy this week:
Ace Young
Kellie Pickler
Lisa Tucker

Random Thoughts:

1. Wasn't that little girl just the cutest little thing?

2. Does anyone else want to throw rocks at the audience? It's like "SHUT UP!" Do these people not realize that the show could be an hour long if the audience would just be quiet?

3. Constantine was in the audience tonight, *sigh*. Even with dorky glasses on, he's still cute.

4. What was with all the boring forgettable performances? There were so many really good songs in the 50s, why wasn't there more perkiness to the show? I don't know how a group of 11 people could make an entire decade of music seem so dull and boring.

5. Mandisa is going to win American Idol.

6. Kellie Pickler was completely and totally stumped when Ryan talked to her after her performance. Perhaps the whole "boobs knocking out her mic" thing threw her off, but she looked like a blank etch-a-sketch.

7. To anyone who tries to compare Ace and Constantine - *smack* - my C'tine can sing. Ace is just a talentless prettyboy.

8. Last but certainly not least - you may have noticed that I conveniently did not comment on Chris' performance. There's a reason for that - my comments can't be contained into a brief statement, so we're doing an end rant about Chris. I give every single person in this competition more credit than I give him. I give the worst performers from previous years, including Jon Stevens more credit than Chris. Every single person I have seen on this show who has lasted more than a couple weeks has moved out of their comfort zone to perform something different or challenging to them. Even Bo Bice, who I heavily criticized last year, moved out of his comfort zone. At least when Bo turned a song into a rock song, I got the feeling that he really was doing it on his own, not just copying someone else. But just like last week's "unique" Red Hot Chili Peppers cover, this week's choice was also a cover. The 50s was full of enough good material, but that isn't what Chris chose. To anyone who thinks Chris' version of "I Walk the Line" was different and unique - go listen to the version recorded by the rock band Live. Others have ranted about Chris' ability to keep sticking to rock and American Idol's obvious bias towards him, but I've given him some slack. That slack is starting to wear thin. Chris, you're a darn good singer and an excellent performer. You're too good to shortchange yourself like this. Break OUT of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. I know you're up to it. Prove yourself worthy to win the crown that Simon is ready to hand you already!

I thought Elliott was pretty good this week. Not the best, but good, and his stage presence was much improved.

He isn't getting a lot of votes though. His #

I thought Ace was awful. His voice seemed thin for the song and the wrong style for it.
How could the judges all love what I heard?

I also didn't like Elliott's vocals. Normally I do, but it just didn't work for me on this song.

I've liked all of Lisa's performances before, but thought she seemed out of sync in this one. It was a good selection, she just didn't do it as well as it could have been done.

I normally love Taylor but thought there were so many better songs he could have chosen. This was too repetetive and limited in range. Not his best.

I liked what Chris did with the song and love his voice and style. No very 50ish though.

Kathryn, Kellie and Mandisa were very good. Kevin did the best he could do and probably held his own for another week or so.

Bucky was probably at the bottom and may be eliminated, although he has a fan base that didn't put him in the final 3 last week.

Final 3, Lisa, Bucky and Ace with Lisa to go.

But, who knows, totally unpredictable.

Once again Katherine McPhee looked and sounded like a major star. She clearly outclassed everybody else. Nobody is even close. She will win the competition.

1) Point of order, Barry was on the show year before last (when Fantasia and Jon Stevens was on), not last year. They did not have any guest stars last year. Year before last, they had Barry and Gloria Estafan and others that I have forgotten.

2) Top:
Mandisa - best by a mile
Chris - You might as well recycle the Bo Bice comments, Curlio. The guy's got the genre down and will be going a long way. To quote my husband, the only way that you are going to get him to stretch will be to get him to perform a Queensryche song.
Kat - great vocals but boring. At least her dress didn't make her look pregnant this week.
Paris - great vocals but still not connecting with the audience. I think she's going to be a major force in another 3-4 years when she gets older.

Ace - looks have taken him as far as they can. My totally outrageous conspiracy theory as to why he is not getting negative comments from the judges is that they don't want him to also get VFTW votes...
Kellie - wore thin on me long ago
Bucky - he was having a great time, but I didn't think he sounded that great
Kevin - what can I say? He shouldn't be this far in the competition as it is

I really like Taylor, but I was terribly disappointed with his performance tonight. I found it too repetitive and boring. However, Barry's comments were enlightening - that Taylor has one of the best true "whiskey tenor" voices that he has ever heard with a much higher range than he (Barry) has. I've always thought that Barry has a high range, so I found this interesting.

3) Random notes

"Wasn't that little girl just the cutest little thing?"

Ummm...I thought that she was just your average cute 7 yr old girl...

"Kellie Pickler was completely and totally stumped when Ryan talked to her after her performance...she looked like a blank etch-a-sketch"

That's been my opinion of her from the first time I saw her perform. While I have not been a big Carrie Underwood fan, comparing Kellie to Carrie is like comparing Ace to Constantine...

"To anyone who tries to compare Ace and Constantine - *smack* - my C'tine can sing. Ace is just a talentless prettyboy"

I couldn't agree more.

"Mandisa is going to win American Idol."

I think so too. Final two will be Mandisa and Chris...

" Last but certainly not least - you may have noticed that I conveniently did not comment on Chris' performance..."

~snicker~ As soon as I heard "you know who you are", I knew we would be in for a Curlio might as well pace yourself, I suspect that you are going to be in for several weeks worth of ranting...

Chris sang "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash. Barry Manilow was a guest teacher for them and they went in to a long conversation about how Barry had never heard the version that Chris was going to sing tonight. Chris took full credit for the arrangement and never once mentioned that he might have taken his version from someone else. The version he sang was exactly the same as the one by the band Live! As soon as the music started, I looked at my wife and said, "This is a Live song!" Seemed like a bit of a fraud to me. He sang "Higher Ground" by Stevie Wonder last week but sang the Red Hot Chilli Peppers version and credited RHCP. Just seemed a bit shady. The judges went on and on praising him tonight for his creative arrangement and how much the loved it. IT WAS A LIVE SONG!!! Anyway, just wondering if anyone else caught this?

Taylor performed that song VERY well. The man was the only person who TRUELY stuck to the theme and actually performed it like it would have been performed in the 50's. I think a lot of the viewers are going to miss that. He skipping dance moves looked kinda goofy, and I think he might have taken the 50's theme a little TOO seriously. But when he started dancing in the audience, I cheered.

That being said, the song was BORING. The lyrics and notes were way to repetitive and he would have done much better with Johnny B Goode or *GASP* Ray Charles (although I think he's saving the best for last with that guy) His performance was EXCELLENT if he could make me cheer during that song. Good job for Taylor, but PLEASE pick a better song

Curlio, love your rant about Chris, you nailled it! I'd like to see Chris do something without turning into a rock performance, it's time to show some versatility.

Here's the reason Chris won't win: He's married. It's difficult to get young ladies to hold up marriage proposal signs to a married guy.

I've got the McFever for Kat, she's classy. And she didn't look pregnant at all this week, nice dress.

Vote For The Worst .com will keep Pig Pen (without the dust) on the show for another week. So long Bucky.

I think Ace may be going home this week, in spite of Randy and Paula's intense desire to keep him there. America heard that off-pitch mess. I don't understand how those judges could have listened to Ace and said things like "Ace is back?"

I think Lisa will stay because people know she's a good singer. I think her past performances might push her through. She has some good will.

I also agree with the reivew of Chris, he is ulitmatlely boring because he never leaves his comfort zone.

TWAS THE BEST. anyone who listens to this kind of music, like me, knows that he is being a copycat, a good one, but still a copycat. he is a great singer? yes, of course. unique? i don't think so.

I thought all of them did well vocally this week, for the one that leaves it is a tough one to swallow. Last week was terrible, this week it was great.

Also I saw a quite different show than the reviewer here, my summary is-

Mandisa- While she has a powerful voice, I think she is quite dull as a solo act, I couldn't pick her voice out of lots of others really. She should last through for some time, but eventually she will leave the show.

Bucky - Sounded better this week but still isn't up to the level to win this. For Country he is good, but not an Idol.

Chris - I don't think Chris should change who he is to please a few, when you do that you often leave the show on Wed. Better to stick to winning and doing songs that suite you. Tonight wasn't his best, but he was in the middle somewhere.

Katharine - I always forget what she sings and I did tonight to, she is beautiful and should be on broadway, doubt she will carry on to the top 4 here.

Taylor - He will be a solo act and was entertaining, not the best song but he was different tonight.

Lisa - She blew me away a few weeks back and hasn't repeated since. I think she is having trouble being real, having her own identity. Her voice gets lost like the others but she should sing professionally.

Kevin - He is cute and will get the little girl vote, I couldn't imagine an album with him singing though. I would send him home tomorrow or now even.

Elliot - He has another voice that sounds like so many others, I have never been impressed with any of his performances. It is almost as though it is the same song every week, the same goes for Mandisa, Lisa, Katharine and to some extent Chris.

Kellie - I thought this was her best performance vocally and moving around the stage. She almost sounded like she could win this tonight. She has brought what no other female contestant has to the show, sexiness. Simon, shame on you for looking where you seemed to be looking.

Ace - I though he showed a stronger voice tonight that he has shown so far so he moves on this week. It wasn't a great start but he was an Idol so stays this week.

Overall great vocals this week but many songs were forgetten by me already as to what they sang. Overall I would pick Kevin to depart, but chances are one of the unlucky others will get the honor.

For the first time since her audition, I was impressed with Paris tonight. She sang and acted the part very well.

Last week Ace dropped the ball and was in the bottom 3, I feel like he fought hard and did better this week.

Mandisa's a powerhouse, end of story, that girl can sing.

I thought Chris would give in to the pressure and move away from rock...I was curious to hear it...but now I find myself firmly rooting for him to stay a rocker. I loved his performance because I found myself listening to the story of the song. Never did that before with that particular song. So, I applaud his determination to stay true to himself.

cheebe said that these were the top ten performances..

1. Katherine
Katherine may be the most consistant singer in the competition. The difference this time, was her performance was also really good. Reminded me of Miss America a bit, but really good.

2. Taylor
Very simple song. Silly performance. And STILL #2.

3. Ace
Why did his fans turn on him when this pretty boy is actually talented?

4. Chris
On one hand. Wow, he made a random song sound like the same song he sang every week from the first time he arrived. How original! [sarcastic]. But, on the other hand, I actually liked the performance.

5. Paris
The way she controlled that last note was impressive. Didn't 100% connect. But she still may be the best performer in the competition.

6. Elliot
He has it in him. Not this week, but he has it in him though.

7. Mandissa
Very good. But why, only 7? Little too obvious of a performance. No cool factor. Once again, sounded like she sang the wrong note but had so powerful a voice she reversed her mistake immediately. Just an observation, not a complaint.

8. Kellie
One of the only contestants I purposely didn't fast forward through on my tivo. But the performance reminded me of a television commercial. Plus, it's obvious at this point that this girl is incapable of putting on an act of any scale.

9. Lisa
She really, really, really, really looked great. Very cool. Just too young. not ready. I said this from the beginning.

10. Kevin
Okay enough already with the eyes. And the speech empedement while you sing. Your performance was a case of sudden hilarity. The way you tried to look cool by putting your right hand in your pocket. The way Randy said he can see himself in you (In your A** that is). And the way Simon correctly noted that your fans (At will love your performance. You are a true class act. And for that, you did good.

11. Bucky
You exposed yourself here, Bucky. This can be a problem.

11. Bucky

I agree that Chris will go a long way, but unless he learns to push beyond his comfort zone he will never have a long career. Eventually all of his albums will sound exactly the same. But I have pretty much given up on Chris, so I suppose I won't take such a hard stance in the future. As for the judges, well I think they need to replace all of them. It's become a game to me - Which tired old comments will the judges throw out this time. We actually sit there and guess(I guessed a few times for the "that was too old for you" to be tossed to Paris and Kat, but maybe they're off of that kick?). I might even start keeping score and posting my results. As a matter of fact, I think I will. I encourage everyone else to play along and post your results as well. We'll see who can predict the judges best!

I figured out why I liked Taylor last night, and most people said he had an off night. His normal performance goes something like "la la la WOO la la la WOO la la la WOO" and last night it was "la la la la la la la la la WOO" He sang more and "WOO'd" a bit less. Anyone remember Ric Flair, the wrestler? I think Taylor and Ric should do an album together, Ric can teach Taylor something about the "WOO!"
i have read alot on american idol and am an avid viewer but your review is like simon says you are in lala land.

Luckily we're allowed to have different opinions. I stand by my picks. Y'all should be proud of me, as I resisted the urge to toss Chris there, simply for being old and repetitive He's a good singer though so, that should keep him out of my bottom.

Mandisafan - I couldn't agree with you more. I too felt like I was getting repetitive. I don't know if I'm just a jaded AI fan who wants the "WOW" all the time or what, but they were boring. I promise to consult a thesaurus for next week! And you're right, we're all entitled to our opinions. I like seeing what other people saw. Occasionally it makes me see a performance in a different light.

To the guest who missed Simon's interview - he picked Chris, Kellie, and Taylor to be the final three.

Lastly, I just heard a clip of Kellie's song, and without looking at her, it sounded good. But as soon as I looked at her, she lost me. I think I didn't like Kellie because the passion of the song just didn't come across. She simply can't convey that type of longing, sob story or not.

8. kevie - u know what? that was actually kinda cute. i hear from my extended family members that you do indeed have a lock on the 9-11 year olds. good on ya.

7. kelli - fill in blank_________________________

6. parris - not a constructive comment admittedly but grrl there is something about u i just do not like. this show may just be working against you in the long run given your personality. me thinks it would be better to be voted off sooner - say in the 4rth or 5th slot maybe...and u r talented fershizzle.

5. taylor - wtf was that? ur pissing me off now. just sing arse hole just sing. quit with the 'showy' sh+t. leave vegas far behind 4 now. plz. cause u iz da diggity!

4. mandisa - mandy u came and u gave without taking and we need u today - oh mandy! divide and conquer sista divide and conquer. i lurvd it. now thats entertainment. and - oh - you looked stunning!

3. elliot - ya man yamin it is just love all the way around the block. i am forever in ur dog pound and u can come and lick my hi-fi/wi-fi any time! gold - pure gold.

2. chris - get out of ur contract as quickly as u can. they r gonna bend u over and take it every which way but with a proper thank u! i noticed u pulled the 'live' version out of the vaults and i have no problem w/that as i alone and lightning crashes are 2 of my all time favorites. i think i would have liked to know that - that u would have said something on camera though u have made it clear from the beginning that just about all u r and do is about the live lead. i am gonna give u the benefit of the doubt and guess it was an edit as it does not seem like the character that u have displayed to us. so, ok rock on wit ur bad self!

1. katharine - speechless really - in a good way - at least i think so. while u are not my favorite u deserved the slap happy hand clapping in front of my laptop monitor directly after watching your performance - that went on despite myself. u deserve to be lauded and even more so u deserve to be lauded by the ai team. it is ur name that should be tripping out of simon's mouth time and time again instead of 'u know who'. thnx for entertaining.

side bar. subject: band

well let me just puff down for a minute and say that there can heretofore never again be any question as to whether or not the band officially and completely sucked before ol berry got his juicy hands on them. after manilow got done pimp slapping the biatches (u know the kind - we have all seen it before - the spit on the finger tips and a nice big back handed round a bout fwack!) we now see what it should all sound like. dear ai peel off some of those phat notes bulging out of ur pockets and higher (<-----intended) yourselves a conductor/arranger/director! post haste.

purged once again. big shout out to the curl and the dust for making this all possible. licks all around.

off 2 see how the cheeb wrapped it then curlio's take...

Elliot did not say he wasn't fond of Barry. He said he wasn't fond of his songs.

Last night, I had to (mis)fortune of going to the show "Annie" starring the great character actor John Schuck, best known to me as the crime-fighting robot in the 70's sitcom, Holmes and Yo-yo, back in the day when robots were "Tin Man"-like with hinged doors on their bellies, so I was not able to watch AI at all. I strongly dislike little singing kids since it is steeped in precociousness, so the show was 2 1/2 hours of hell, only to appease my fiancee who is a big fan. Anyway back to AI, I listened to the songs from the show this morning and am basing my thoughts purely on what I heard. I have not even read Curlio's column, nor have I seen anything from last night, so I am curious to see if my thoughts match up.

My thoughts in alpha order:

Ace - Boring, boring, boring. This guy is obviously all looks, because his singing stinks. He sounded like Justin Timberlake on a way off night and that note at the end was cringe-worthy. He also mumbled a few lines, so we will see if that hurts him or not. Most likely not.

Bucky - I thought Bucky sounded fantastic. He would have done Buddy Holly proud. The band was horrible, which seems like a recurring theme, but I could see this being on the radio easily!

Chris - Best peformance of the night, hands down. This is a good and bad thing. It is good because the arrangement was new, it was radio-worthy, and Chris rocked it. This is bad because the show obviously took time to help Chris arrange a new version of the song. So much so that it was almost unrecognizable. Except for maybe Elliot's song (and maybe Katherine's), it looks like everyone else had to sing the original arrangement. Hmm...

Elliot - This guy really can sing. The song was a little dull and safe for me and not the best thing he has ever done, but he did enough to sail by for another week. He needs to stop doing safe songs and step it up though. And what kind of song was that? That did not sound like anything from the 50s!

Katherine - Her voice is very radio-friendly. The song was not. But, I could see her doing this at a smoky nightclub late at night. She did start to lose it a little at the end when she was trying to take it up a notch, but overall, it was good.

Kellie - I am sorry, but she is another person that is relying on things other than her vocal talent. Unlike Bucky, Kellie sounded like a poor imitation of Patsy Cline. She was flat in spots and the song was dull.

Kevin - I did not hear this song. Automatic Bottom three for this shrimp. Go home! I don't want to see you in the AI concert!

Lisa - I think Lisa is the female version of Carleton Banks. If there was a soulless African-American girl, this one is it. How can you make "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" sound like the most boring song ever? Lisa needs to go. Only after Kevin. And get away from the clutches from her Mommy and take some risks and sing some "fun" songs!

Mandisa - Great, great, great. The song was not radio-worthy, but Mandisa made it radio-worthy. She got a little screechy again so she needs to watch that. Otherwise, it was the second-best performance of the night.

Paris - After redeeming herself last week, she fell right back into old habits this week. The first verse was horrible. She actually sounded nervous as her voice quivered a little. She got back on track for the last two verses, but the damage was already done. She could be sitting in the bottom three tonight based on the vocals and poor song choice and the appearance of being safe.

Taylor - The song began well and then flat-lined and turned dull as Taylor never kicked it up a notch. That song choice was poor. And what was up with that terrible sax? That made an already bad song sound ten times worse! If I were the singers, I would start complaining about the band as I could see the band totally kill someone's performance and jeopardize them into being sent home!

So, the best singer of the night was Chris. If he was a ten, then the second best singer was Mandisa with an eight. Bucky was third with a seven. I think the bottom three will be Kevin, Paris, and Lisa. That is not based on performances per se, but based on gut and rationale. Otherwise, the three worse singers that I heard were Lisa, Ace, and Kellie.

Now it's time to read all of the comments and Curlio's column to see if the performances influenced the vocal talent (or lack thereof)!

Waiting for the real show to start...

It’s the final night of the competition. The MAN-DISA and Ace Young are standing next to each other, tightly holding hands, nervously awaiting the announcement of who will be the next American Idol! Ryan Seacrest looks at the contestants “Ace! You are the American Idol!!!” The crowd erupts. The MAN-DISA gives Ace a big smile and hug as Ryan pushes her offstage. Ryan then hands the mic to Ace:

“Thank you MAN-DISA, for being gracious in defeat. You are a BIG person!”

“First of all I would like to thank my mirror, for never letting me forget how good I truly look.”

“Secondly, I would like to thank my hairbrush for making my hair look so awesome!”

“I would also like to thank my parents for giving me great jeans. They fit so good and didn’t they look great on ‘Polka Night’.”

“I would also like to thank the judges for choosing homely contestants like Kevin, Gedeon and Elliot for me to compete with.”

“And most of all, I would like to thank – ME! The hair, the eyes, the face, the jeans – Ace, you are the total package!”

As the other contestants converge upon Ace for a congratulatory hug, we hear these immortal words – “The hair! Don’t touch the hair!!!”
Don't mind me, I'm just a guest.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I thought that the OVERALL standard of the show last night was one of the highest ever at this stage of the competition.

Barry Manilow did a great job in coaching the contestants. Just listen to Elliott when he was "singing" his song in rehearsal, and then listen to it after Barry told him not to "sing" but to "interpret" the song- Big difference.

The six really good performances for me were:

Kellie. (I don't really like her, but I have to give her props for last night)

Bottom three:

Love you Lisa, but you were the worst last night. With more maturity, you will have an excellent opportunity to pursue your passion

Kevin was better than last week. Still don't like him, but wasn't bad. Normally, I like Taylor, but he was off last night. His fan base will see him through .

At this stage, the top four must be Katherine, Mandisa, Paris and Chris, with Elliott and Taylor as outsiders.
