American Idol's Top 12 meets with Simon's approval
Someone at American Idol must have gotten the water cups mixed up. I predict someone will get fired over this one. Simon Cowell got Paula Abdul's water instead of his own. Simon liked 9 of the 12 performances on American Idol tonight, and while they were good, they were not that good. I just don't get it! Simon is always mean, he had to have gotten something slipped in his drink.
After a recap of how we got here to this stage of the competition, Ryan Seacrest talked to the judges. Paula Abdul said that this year's Top 12 is the most unique, diverse, talented, and talked about Top 12 they've ever had. Randy Jackson was asked if he would miss his dog pound, he said the dog pound just got bigger. Simon Cowell talked about how difficult the themes will be, as the contestants will have to break out of their comfort zones.
Then, as the theme is Stevie Wonder, we had a clip about Stevie. Stevie surprised the Top 12 by showing up at rehearsals. Many of the contestants were in tears. Stevie likes the show, as it brings people together in the spirit of music.
Ace Young was the first to attempt a Stevie song. He was very happy to have met Stevie, saying he's totally satisified with his life now. Ace's version of "Do I Do" was only okay for me. It was great, it wasn't painful. To steal a line from Simon, it was a lot like a karaoke version. Randy was excited and worried about tonight. Stevie is one of his favorite artists, but he's also one of the hardest to sing. Randy said Ace couldn't find the key, it was just alright. Paula disagreed with Randy, saying it started the night off fantastic. Simon told Ace it was lucky for him the audience is easily pleased. It seemed to take the audience a minute to figure out that that was an insult as they first half cheered, then booed.
Kellie Pickler, who isn't familiar with Stevie's music, decided to sing "Blame it on the Sun. Stevie said she would have the right spirit to sing the song, but needs to work on intonation. To me, she didn't seem to find her pitch on the song. It wasn't even close to good. All of the judges missed Kellie's spark. Randy said it was almost like a non-event. Paula could tell that Kellie was nervous. Simon said that she put half of America to sleep. It was her worst performance so far. Ryan talked to her a bit afterward, and Kellie said she had fake eyelashes on. They felt like tarantulas, but had to add later that they weren't real tarantulas.
Elliot Yamin always wanted to meet Stevie as well. Stevie said that he sang "Knocks me off my feet" believably. After watching him, I thought he was very good. Randy didn't think it was his best performance, but said the problem was that Elliott realizes how hard it is to bring something new to something that good. Paula loved that Elliott showed how moved and inspired he was by Stevie. She loves his passion. Simon thought it was the best so far, but that it didn't have the wow factor.
Mandisa said her feet were killing her, so Ryan was nice and took her shoes off for her. Stevie was impressed with Mandisa, but said she could probably sing anything. Her version of "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing" was great. It was a very good performance. Randy said that it wasn't as great as last week's butg it was the best so far. Paula agreed with Stevie, that Mandisa could sing anything. Simon said she was the best so far, so apparently she outdid Elliott in his book.
I was afraid of Bucky Covington singing Stevie Wonder. When he said he never owned a Stevie album, I was more nervous. Stevie told him to watch his intonation. I actually liked Bucky singing "Superstition." I thought it was a nice version, but they curled his hair! Randy thought it was the right choice for him. He liked seeing Bucky give it his all. Paula enjoyed hearing him sing Stevie. She did wish he could have gotten out of his comfort zone a little bit more. Simon thought it was one of his best so far, but didn't like the "Jessica Simpson hairstyle." Bucky said it was not his idea.
After listening to Melissa McGhee, then hearing the judges comments, I want to know what the * the judges are on, and where the * can I get some? First she messes up the lyrics in front of Stevie. Then, during the performance of "Lately" not only did she mess up the lyrics, but she was so painfully horrible that I can't even describe the horror. It was without a doubt the worst performance I have ever heard on American Idol. I think that Randy is going to call her on it, because he says she know what he's going to say, but he only mentions the lyrics. He only pointed out a few flat and sharp notes. Paula I never expect the truth from, but come on, "something soothing" about Melissa's voice? The only thing soothing about that was the fact that it ended. Surely Simon would save me, back me up - but NO Simon called it her best performance so far! He said she was edgy and contemporary. Edgy and contemporary? Simon honey what ARE you on?
Lisa Tucker performed "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" nicely. I thought it was okay, the vocal was good, but I wasn't feeling it. She got better towards the end for me though. Randy liked the end as well, calling the middle boring. He thought the end was hot. Paula noticed that she was nervous, but loved it when Lisa and the band did the little stops in the song. Simon once again pulled out the "one of the best" line. He said that for the first time, he saw someone take control of the stage.
Kevin Covais said he needs to uphold his status as the sex symbol on the show. Stevie said Kevin's voice is interesting, and he brought a sense of fun to the song. His "Part Time Lover" was nice, but not all that great. It was very fun to watch though. Kevin is so funny. Randy told Kevin he didn't expect him to sing in tune or sing it good, but he did. Paula loved the strange little dance steps, and that Kevin sang the song in time, as it's difficult. Simon returned to his mean self, telling Kevin that this was the point where Stevie turns down the volume. He called it appalling. Kevin fired back that he didn't expect much from Simon anyway. Simon didn't seem happy about that one, but said that Kevin is entitled to say it. Before he performed, Ryan had two girls bring up a sign they made for Kevin. Then after, the performance someone pointed out a sign that said Kevin is my Heaven. Ryan said that Simon is his hell.
Katharine McPhee sang "Until you Come Back to Me." She was nervous about singing Stevie, as she already sang a Stevie song once and didn't get a great response. I thought her performance was very good. Randy loved that the Katharine McPhee that they fell in love with was back. Paula told her that there is something about her voice that pierces the heart. The Paula lugged out Simon's "your best performance ever" line. Simon told Kat that she is beginning to remind him of Kelly Clarkson.
Stevie said that Taylor Hicks has feeling. Taylor sang "Living for the City." It was a good performance, lots of energy and passion. Randy called it hot and fearless. Paula loves that he's fun and has such passion. Simon got booed, because he started saying that Taylor is like every dad that has ever gotten drunk at a wedding, but when the audience let him finish, he added that the difference is that Taylor can sing. Then Ryan and Taylor did some little thing that sounded like it was rehearsed about Taylor's hair color.
Paris Bennett was overwhelmed with emotion at meeting Stevie. Stevie said there is nothing wrong with emotion. He said that Paris reminds him of Fantasia. She performed "All I Do" very well. Randy was happy to see what the judges first saw in Paris. He called her unbelievable. Paula said it was like she was a seasoned veteran, doing this for years. Simon said that tonight was like watching two different competitions, the first half was alright, but the second half was brilliant.
Last up tonight was Chris Daughtry, who was worried he wouldn't find a Stevie song that he could sing. I predicted it, he found out that "Higher Ground" was a Stevie song - the Red Hot Chili Peppers covered it. Chris likes both versions, and hoped to mix the two. He did mix them nicely, giving a great performance. Randy likes that Chris finds a way to make the songs his own every week, but he was a little worried about Chris this week. Paula wasn't worried, she just enjoys every week. Simon thanked God for Chris, saying that Chris' performance is the only one that would stand out in the real world. He added that it's important that the contestants make the songs their own.
My bottom three:
As for the top, I really don't have anyone to put there. Yes, the performances were overall very good. But no one really performed a "WOW performance for me. I just expected a little bit more at this stage. Or maybe all the praise from the judges was so over-the-top that it had the opposite effect on me. Don't get me wrong, I liked all of them, but I can't really pick one or two out as phenomenal. Maybe they were all that good, I don't know.
You know I must be getting old because I really would like for the band to disappear. I don't think you can hear the singers as well as in past seasons. I know that some discussion has arisen about the band before. Maybe my hearing is going, but I think that band is drowning out the singers. Enough of that. I was very surprised at Bucky. He was actually pretty good, but that hair! In fact I though Kat's dress only feuled the pregnancy rumors, Parris looked like a Qtip, and some of the makeup was abit much. Hopefully the stylists will get back on their game next week. My bottom 3 pick:
Kevin because Simon is right, he can not sing. I also didn't like the cocky little attitude.
Melissa because she flubbed the lyrics. Of course I am not a big Stevie fan and if she hadn't said anything I wouldn't have known it. (Or maybe couldn't hear it over the band)
Bucky just because he donesn't have the fan base. I didn't think he was that bad and deserves another week there...and another stylist.
1. Chris...I think he will win it
2. Elliot...He is just plain good
3. Mandisa...any woman who can say what women have been saying for years about high heels on national tv, and perform without shoes...she's got my vote!
Geez, I clicked Katharine McPhee instead of Melissa McGhee as the worst performance tonight. Can someone please take it off? Katharine is in another league and will go all the way. Simon's comparison to Kelly Clarkson was very apt. I've been saying that for weeks.
Chris TOTALLY ripped off the Chili Peppers...I don't think Simon's ever heard their version considering he called Chris' rendition "his own." He's a good performer, but I lost respect for him tonight after he refused to come out of his comfort zone along with the rest of the group. Total COP OUT!!!
Mandisa is still the best!!! She has shown consistent superb performance and she'll definitely get my vote - How I wish I am in America now!!!!! I'm a big fan of AI but too bad, I am in another country - Malaysia. Go Mandisa go!!!!
Sorry folks but tonight was aweful, bad songs, bad hair, bad singing, bad everything. I think this was the worst since Elton John night two years ago, but on the bright side it is over. Whoever leaves goes out on a performance they never should have been forced to do, they need to retire Stevie Wonder songs forever from the show!
Overall, I think the contestants are awesome this year. Kevin could be the next William Hung. To think he is still in the competition at this point blows my mind. Kelly looked very odd tonight with the "tarantulas" on her eyes. Not a becoming look for her. Kat's dress was pathetic, and as soon as she walked on stage I thought the same thing someone else posted: "that dress makes her look like she's hiding something" I agree that she could be the next Kelly Clarkson. I think Mandisa is losing weight. Bucky showed promise tonight. He'd look better if he'd cut his hair. And speaking of hair, Taylor should color his. He'd definitely be hot if he did.
Cheebe says, these are the performances, listed from best to worst.
Simply in another class, in my opinion. Almost convinced me of everything tonight. Seriously, two weeks in a row, he's the one the crowd goes the most wild for.
Back to where she should be. Stylists did a good job.
What I liked about this guy, was I could tell he was extremely nervous, but still could tell from that performance he was the best.
A real dork. Out of all performers, she's the absolute worst by far. A real dork. The 4 position is based solely on the vocal. Astounding. She also was MURDERED by the sylists.
Very strange for me. But her worst performance is still worth the 5 spot. And the stylist's did good.
She was really off a lot on pitch. Pretty much butchered the song. But there seriously is something unique in the sound of her voice for the parts that she nailed. She should stay for a while.
This guy is a flawless performer. Stylists seemed to ruin both his hair and wardrobe somehow. Looked like a skater punk.
This performance was like watching a really good B movie. By far, her best performance. All over the place vocally, but in a cool way. First time she wasn't excrutiatingly boring.
I officially like Kellie now. I liked the performance but really did kinda daydream through most of it. The messed up the pitch, but so did everyone else (except Taylor). Also butchered by the idiot stylists.
Arguably his best performance.
Carson Deisel himself. Uh, yea, that was original. No wait, I mean the opposite of original.
This was entertaining for being over the top and ridiculous. He's constantly under pitch, and sings with an awkward speech impedement. What more can you ask for? He's even a worse performer than Katherine. Could this be Randy's secret inside joke?
Well, I didn't care for any of the songs tonight as I have never been a fan of Stevie Wonder.
Chris, Taylor, and Katherine have my vote for top 3. I think Kevin will go tomorrow.. but, I could be wrong :-)
Now, for their hair and make-up all I can say is Yikes!! Bucky's was the worst- he needs a cut, and a dentist. Taylor would look great with short spikey hair.. even if he keeps it gray, short, short, short... Paris, I agree, looks like a Q-tip.. too much make-up on Kevin and Kellie. What are the stylists thinking?
First off.. Isn't it funny that normally everytime someone sings a Stevie Wonder song they get trashed and the judges say that his songs are too tough to sing.. then they have Stevie Wonder week?? I mean, Stevie's songs are great because of Stevie's unique voice.. not because of the songs. COME ON American Idol! Well, now that that's off my chest...
Taylor rocked once again. He's a true original. I'm not sure that he's a "pop" singer, but he's great and I would buy his CD.
Chis' performance was cool. I liked it once again. He doesn't have to be the best vocalist to do well as a rocker.
Katherine has some pipes!! I think she's the best vocalist on the show, but I always find myself wondering why every performance is only so-so.
Bucky did great once again. It's too bad he doesn't have the "IT/X/Star" factor.
Paris, She was awesome with the Jazz. The audition is carrying her through for me. Stevie says she reminds him of Fantasia.. am I the only one that hated Fantasia???
Kellie, I love her.. a victim of the theme show.
Ace just isn't that good. I plan on him going far because of his looks/performance ala Constantine.
Melissa, I just can't figure out. Sometimes she's great. Other times she's average. Maybe I vote for her just to see how hot she'll be next week. Hmm..
Why is Kevin still here? Is it a joke people are playing on AI? I'm with Simon on this one.. let's get serious here.
Everyone else, I could care less about. Lisa, cute. Mandisa, not my thing, ever. Eliot.. outstanding vocally.. but as Simon would say.. but who cares?
I agree -- Stevie Wonder is just fine but he would not be able to pull off a country or rock song! His songs are good because they are "his songs" and his "style." So it is unfair of American Idol to have these "theme" shows. Whoever wins, as usual, will sing their own style not these idiot theme songs. Yuk!
