American Idol girls give it one last shot curlio
 2006-03-07 21:45:20
Television The girls on American Idol gave it all they had for one last shot towards the American Idol top 12. Honestly I wouldn't feel unhappy with any combination of the remaining 8 girls going on. All of the girls are either talented, fun, or entertaining. It's a win-win situation.

Paris Bennett kicked off the performances with Gloria Estefan's "Conga." She said that her nickname is Princess P, but she's a tomboy. She did a lot of moving and dancing. It wasn't a vocally challenging song, but it was a nice performance. She obviously listened to the "too old" criticism last week. Randy Jackson didn't really like the song choice that well, as he wants her to challenge herself. He was entertained though. Paula Abdul prefers Paris doing the uptempo songs. She was surprised by some of the melody choices that Paris made with the song. Simon was glad she took a "younger" song, telling her that her enthusiasm will get her through to the top 12. Ryan Seacrest asked Paris how she was feeling. Paris said she was feeling good. She decided that if she was going to make it into the top 12, she would do it dancing.

Lisa Tucker revealed that she loves Jimi Hendrix and was inspired to play guitar after hearing him. She sang "Where I Stand" by Tiffany Taylor. She's a great singer, the song gave me goosebumps in a couple of places. She looked a little older with the straight hair, I thought. Randy felt that song was a little old for her still, and didn't come off as great. Paula wished she had picked a song that they were more familiar with that everyone could have gotten into. Simon told Lisa that she's super talented, but it sounds like her mother is picking out her songs. He added that she will sail through to the next round, because she's super talented.

Melissa McGhee, who loves fast cars, sang Heart's "What About Love." I liked her performance, it was very good. Randy felt that it was a little sharp at the end, but still a really good song choice. Paula loves that she improves every week, calling Melissa a powerhouse. Simon disagreed, feeling that Melissa booked her plane ticket home with the last note. He thought she shouted the song. Ryan asked Melissa how she felt doing the song, Melissa said she felt great.

Before Kinnik performed, Ryan Seacrest talked to Katharine McPhee. Kat said she wanted to choose something more fun, and not worry about what everyone thinks. This led to questions about her leaving the show. Ryan was getting calls on his radio show about why Katharine was leaving, apparently some people said she was leaving because she's pregnant. Kat is not leaving (at least not unless she's voted off) and is not pregnant either. Ryan joked about the baby being Kevin Covais' child (see picture of Kevin's face for his reaction to that.).

Then it was time for Kinnik Sky to perform. Kinnik loves chitlins by the way. She sang "If I ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys. I didn't like her performance. I love her, but I really think this was her exit performance. Randy said that it started out amazing, but it went sharp and stayed sharp. Paula said she found her style, but she was off tonight. Simon agreed with Randy that it started okay. He told her that she booked her ticket home. Ryan asked Simon if he likes to make the contestants feel bad. Kinnik agreed that she went off and had trouble getting back on.

Kat revealed that she went to Boston Conservatory, the same school as Constantine Maroulis. She jokes that she probably learned the same smoldering look there. She sang "Think." The judges loved it. Randy gave her the dawg pound "We have a hot one here" salute. Paula liked seeing her have fun. Simon agreed with Randy saying it was a risk, but she pulled it off. I liked the performance, but I didn't think the vocals were that awesome. It was good enough for her to squeek by, but not as great as the judges though.

Ayla Brown was slightly confused as a child, thinking her father was Elvis until she was about 10, because he sang to her like Elvis. She sang "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedinfield. I felt it was a good performance, with her showing off her confidence. The judges didn't like it though. Randy felt it was okay, but you have to be cautious. He also said that it's a 5 note range, and you need to show off your range every week (see rant at end of article). Paula gives her credit for working so hard every week. Simon felt it was pretty good, but he would love to see the young person from Ayla's film clip onstage. He thinks she needs to be a bit younger.

Mandisa bravely told everyone that she sucked her thumb until she was 24 years old. Then she showed everyone that big girls rock with her performance of "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan. The danger of doing that song is that Whitney Houston also performed that song. Mandisa just owned that song with her completely awesome performance. Randy told her it was the best vocal by a female this season. Paula loved the arrangement. Simon told her that all the other girls would hate her, because she made everyone before her appear ordinary.

Kellie Pickler, who loves dogs, performed "I'm the Only One." It was a nice performance, but I didn't think her vocals were that great. She's just impossible to hate (though for Ms Toad's sake I'm trying!). Randy told her she's been consistent every week (then again, so was Jon Stevens). Paula loves that she got her groove on. Simon told Kellie she is a naughty little minx. He admits she's not the best singer, but she's interesting and he likes her. He even prefers her to "last year's winner." Maybe he's taken to speaking in code to avoid offending past year's fans too (no fair Simon that's my thing!).

Okay, so the bottom one is Kinnik. That's the easy part. the top belongs to Mandisa with Lisa close behind. Paris, Ayla, Melissa, Kellie, and Kat all had good performances. So picking the other half of the bottom gets a smidge difficult. If I had to pick one more to leave, honestly I'd go with Kellie, because I think she's the least vocally talented of the group. I think that Kinnik will leave, with the other one being Melissa or Ayla.

Now the rant. What's the deal with the whole "you gotta show off your vocal range every week" crap? They liked Kellie, are you telling me that Kellie showed off her vocal range every week? Ayla is a good singer, she has great range. Why does every performance need to be about that though? Why can't she just get onstage and have a nice performance? It's pure bullpucky that it's all about range. If that was true, Randy would be calling everyone on it. Not just the singers who actually have range.

Top 5:
1. Mandissa (ridiculous)
2. Kellie (I'm ashamed of myself.)
3. Katherine (Performs with grits in her pants, once again.)
4. Melissa (good performer)
5. Ayla (She was exactly like Mandy Moore, at age 14. Played by a 30 year old.)

Kellie's shortcomings on vocals can be fixed by a good vocal coach and some more practice.

I think some of the reaction to her voice comes from her not being able to completely whitewash her Southern accent. If you're not a country fan, or you're a provincial snob that hates the South, you might not be able to deal with that.

Kellie gets better each week. She's one of the few AI girls this year with the potential to be the total package -- marketable, seductive without dressing or acting like a cheap hoochie mama, appealing to both young and old, talented, warm, likeable -- that the show is looking for. That's why Simon likes her so much.

Well, Curlio, looks like you are right again. Kellie is actually popular...and the rest of us are wondering why. Her voice is weak, and she is stupid. But she is a cute blonde and has a sad past (no flames...I volunteer at a center for troubled teens so I AM sensitive to her background), but neither means she has a voice worth listening to. BTW - I watched the results show with the troubled teens last week...they don't like Kellie either.

I disagree with you, Curlio, regarding Melissa. I really like her, but I thought that this performance was weak and exposed her lack of range.

When they announced that Mandisa was doing a Chaka Khan song (before the commercials), I was walking out the door...I turned around and sat back down to watch. She did not disappoint! Earlier in the evening, I was watching Katharine's performance and thinking "now why did she do a song that Mandisa would do so much better?". Don't get me wrong, I love Katharine and think she's amazingly talented...but Mandisa is made for Aretha/Chaka etc. As Mandisa said, tonight was like singing in the shower...

Kinnik was disappointing. I think she has a great voice, but she blew it.

I have really enjoyed both Lisa and Paris, but I was disappointed in both tonight.

Bottom Three (selected before I read the other reviews): Kinnik, Melissa, Kellie

Top: Mandisa

Better than the rest: Katharine

Average: Paris, Lisa, Ayla

Most likely it will be Kinnik & Melissa who leave, although many of the performances were just average.

Question of the week:

Q: How many Ryan Seacrests can you fit into Mandisa's pant leg?

A: I can't count that high!

ai girls (w)ring!

the rag...

i must be sitting in the third chair then cause after watching all the performances my first reaction is...wtf was that?

pick the final 6...hmmmm...ok based on last nights performances it goes something like this:

geee what can i say .... well to start w/ cheebe has it almost right.

1. mandisa - thank goodness!!! QOTFU sister girlfriend. she gets my no one holds a candle to u vote.

2. katharine - she can really sing though needs to stop hiding her 'weekness' by running out at the top of the big notes. own it girl it would make your singing more open and connectable. she gets my you are naturally tallented tell you mother to fo so sad - not your problem she couldn't turn it vote.

3. pickler - yup that 'pick off pickler'. based on the music only i am not ashamed to say it - she brought it and put it together. based on last night and compared to the others she deserves to go through. simon made a couple of interesting 'unfair' moves to help her; distancing her from carrie and making her more real by calling out the 'dirty' good girl stchick she plays. she get my most improved its even hard for me not to like you vote.

4. melissa - was a very bad series of notes at the end and so what? all those that came before were steller. i thought she was great. love her gritty voice. she gets my you should have had more of a fair shake and more face time you really are good vote.

5. ayla - she sang well. had some pure notes (more than i can say for lisa and paris!) shows musical improvement. love her spirit, determination and her will to self examine. didn't particularly care for the dancing and the 'look' was awkward. she gets my works hardest subsequently really is improving good attitude vote.

6. i do not care.

random notes:

kinnik truly sorry to see you go. hard luck these last few weeks and the 'choke' was understandable. that was a pitch fork mess! not reflective of your tallent. just not the 'tourch song' singers year. chin up.

lisa that was awful! a complete key wreck from my perspective. u r a zombie sweetie. take some time off and live your life. find you and the joy. come back in 4 years. plzzzzzzzz.

paris absolutely nothing about that was good. starting to get a bit creepy actually. quit w/the vaudville crap and get on with it. stand in the center 'naked' and blow.oh and why would anyone not include you in their who has an 'attitude' (not in a good way) conversation? u r coming off as spoilt.

girls should drop off the show fairly quickly. boyz are much better this year. wow.

f+ck hammering on the contestants - what about the band!!! am i the only one who noticed how horrible they were last night? they slaughtered more than one song! easiest to pick up on? listen to mandisa's performance again w/your eyes closed (no peeking). shocking!!! lost track of the arrangement, out of sink, wrong notes being played. i would officially like to vote the keyboard player off of the show!!! best part - back up singers. whew.

did anyone else hear simon's mic picking up him telling paula how to act and react last night? interesting....

seacrusty...more gagging noises.... is a complete and utter waste of ionic matter...

if she is so good why couldn't her grandma get her a recording contract?

I do not know what Randy and Paula are smoking this year, but they are in a league of their own. They tell a contestant to sing a song that is not "old" one week, then they say that the contestant is not showing their range when they do sing a "younger" song the next week. How many "young" songs are showcases for range? Most younger songs, i.e. songs not about "love" tend to be fluff, fun songs. Although I agree that the younger people sometimes do not look credible when they sing about songs of love (in past seasons, I can remember younger contestants smiling through songs of heartache, making it obvious they had no clue what they were singing about) Randy and Paula need to stop confusing the contestants so much and just let them sing! Simon is the only one who knows what he is talking about and is consistent on his advice. I have all the respect for him; Randy and Paula are turning into buffoons. My thoughts on last night:

Paris - Her best performance was her audition performance. Conga is not the best song in the world and could have had more "fun" with "Turn the Beat Around" She is not my favorite anymore.

Lisa - Great singer. Another great vocal performance. She looked wonderful. She is boring.

Melissa - Her voice grates on my nerves. It sounds like she is going to cough up a nasty, nicotine-stained loogie. She doesn't connect with me, her tummy is distracting, and she is gone on Thursday.

Kinnik - She is attactive who showed off her lower register wonderfully. She failed when she had to start singing higher notes. That mistake, plus her lack of fans, will get her knocked out on Thursday.

Katherine - Something about her still bothers me, though I cannot put my finger on it. However, she showed her personality for once and I thought the performance was very good. It is nice to see that she is not a robot.

Speaking of robots, Alya had fun last night too. She looked very good and looked like she was having fun. I am not a fan of the overplayed "Unwritten" but she made the song sound credible.

Mandisa - I feel bad for Mandisa since it looks like her wardrobe is limited as she was wearing the same pants she wore on Thursday. Clothing aside, she was the best singer of the night, though she started to overdo it a little near the end. You could tell she was singing from the heart though and that made the performance great.

Kellie - This was a great song choice and she sang it well. Kellie would be a great video star, singing fluff country songs, but she is no American Idol. She is just so darn huggable though!

Side note - I am beginning to believe that Simon has a thing for young, cute, blond girls. The remarks he made to Kellie confirmed that. In the past seasons, he just loved Carrie Underwood and was very irrational with his comments regarding his personal choice, Carmen Rassmussen who stunk. Anyone else see that?

Waiting for the real show to start...

I was not at all impressed with last night's performance by the girls. Apart from Mandisa everyone else was just average. Kinnik will go tonight, and probably Ayla.

Simon has to stop making it so obvious who his favorites are.

Lisa, please add some variety to your song selection. You are becoming very predictable and boring.

Paris, what was that? Your popularity will see you through this week.

Ms. Toad, I think I will remember the day I agreed with Toadie Frogetta 100%, UNBELIEVABLE!! Sometimes my little amphibian lovely, as two land masses collide a nice little mountain or fertile valley appears, and yes even two hardheads can have a brief moment of clarity! How's, that!

I am disappointed that the judges don't have the guts to tell Paris just how bad that performance was. I guess I thought they had more "stones"! About the others, you took the words out of my mind!!

Toad and Ben1974, took the words right out of my mouth! You are both pretty much spot on! To me there were only a few good performances last night with Mandisa being the best by FAR.

Paris--gosh, she's getting annoying. I really liked her the first time I heard her. Her performance was subpar in my book. And has anyone noticed how the really high pitched voice is continually lowering when she's interviewed?

Lisa--BORING! I wanted to see her do something fun. But instead I found myself leaving the room...yet another bland song that Lisa sounds wonderful on

Melissa--For some reason I can't stand her. I just can't put my finger on it. She butchered the last bit of her song and really does have the smoker voice sound. I think she may go home tonight...

Kinnick--Oh dear, that got messy. Started out well but goodness, the pitch went haywire! She'll go home tonight for sure...

Katharine--Finally, she showed personality and did a more upbeat song! I thought she sounded great

Ayla--Risky song choice, yes. But she did a good job of showing a bit of versatility. I thought she did well though. I too think she's on the borderline of going home, but hopefully she'll be put through. I like her.

Mandisa--Rocked it.

Kellie--Just makes me laugh. Not much of a voice but awesome personality, and her performance really wasn't bad this week.

We'll see how it all pans out...

So our tragedy is your good luck. Satan.

OK, I just have to say this........LEAVE MANDISSA'S FAT A$$ ALONE!!!!!! Yes, she doesn't have a good body, yes, she's fat, obese even, but ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!! Girl can sang & I really enjoy listening to her. I hate that such an issue is made of her size but I really don't recall such a big deal being made of Ruben's, & he was good enough for the final two (I agree he was good enough). Last nights performance was a bit overdone at the end but overall, she's been the one who week after week has produced. I only hope someone helps her with her clothes soon, not good choices. Mama always told me "If it don't look good don't put it on the front porch for everyone to see", & Mandissa, you need sleeves, really.

Kellie, I think she's cute & all but, come on, her voice isn't that good. She doesn't deserve to be there anymore. I like her but.........should be going home although I don't think that will happen just yet.

Paris, I LOVED her before but week after week now I'm losing faith in her. I hope she picks it up soon.

The rest, don't care.

One final note......those of you who want people to vote simply because you "like" that person or think they're "cute", well, grow up! This isn't a competition on who's the cutest, it's about who can sing & who has "IT". For those of you who say you would vote thousands of times, & I bet you actually do, GET A LIFE!!!

Kelly you make some good points and are entitled to any opinion you have and are free to express it, but before you get all "movie of the week on us", realize that this is not just a singing contest, it is the American (which includes the kitchen sink, sometimes quite unfortunately) Idol entertainment experience. It is just to entertain us and make money for the networks and so forth. Sometimes we don't want great singer like Sarah McLachlan, we want a little spunky pink haired girl to get the party started. If that was not true, the Brittany and Jessica, who I can't stand, wouldn't be millionaires.

Will-oops- PS, Glad to have you aboard!!

Hey Will, don't mean to get all "movie of the week" on ya & really not sure how I did, but thanks for the reply, & the welcome. I suppose I really find it irritating that they'll say "40 million voters" when the truth is 40 million votes, whick is quite different. I really wish you could only vote once, or at least once per contestant. They way it's done now, it's not the most popular person who wins but possibly the one with the most neurotic looser fans who vote over & over again. I don't know how that gives us the "American Idol" nudge

Kellie Pickler needs to GO. I wanted to slap Simon last night saying he preferred her to "last year's winner". I did not like Carrie Underwood, but comparing Kellie to her was ridiculous.

Kellie is cute, she's a ditz, but she is NOT a talented singer, she butchered that song last night and she does not deserve top 12. The judges fawned over her last night, proving my theory that the top 10 are pre-selected regardless of talent. To praise Kellie and put down Melissa was just plain WRONG.

I'm telling you, it's fixed people. Besides, a guy needs to win. The guys are 100% more talented than the girls, with the one exception of Mandisa. She is the only really good female singer this year.

For the record, I think The MAN-DISA is a pretty good singing, best one last night anhow.

However, I am worried that the competiton may not go fairly after this week. I mean, what if the MAN-DISA gets hungry during a performance and ends up eating one of her fellow contestants. One gulp & Lisa Tucker would be gone! The MAN-DISA would go ahead week by week & end up winning by dfault. Now that's not fair!

Toad,
I have to say I really appreciate your rants too. I'm sick of the "she's so cute" people. This is a talent show people not a beauty contest! Focus, focus, focus! I also remember one idiot from last year spouting off, proudly if you can believe it, that they had voted for someone like 300 times in one night! NOT RIGHT I say & WHAT A LOSER!!!!!!!! Get a life, there really is more to life than AI, like a job & family but I'm guessing they have neither. I really do enjoy watching the show & reading what others think about it but comon'. I've never even voted once. I just don't care that much. My life is no more richer or poorer, happier or sadder (wd) than it was before Carrie Underwood won, go figure.
