Overall the guys of American Idol seemed to go more for the entertainment factor tonight rather than the wow factor. They picked nice songs that they sang well, and mostly they just entertained the audience. The girls did a bit better, but the boys had a tough act to follow.
I was a little disappointed with Patrick Hall. I was looking forward to him, but his performance of "Come to my Window" wasn't all that great. He got better towards the end, but it just wasn't that great. Randy Jackson thought he was rough, but nervous. Paula Abdul told him to stick to what he does best, the goosebumpy performances. Simon Cowell told him it was the wrong song for him. He also felt like Patrick was missing his piano. I like how nicely Patrick took the criticism. I think he's the type that will take what the judges say and work on it every week he is in the competition.
The judges may have thought that David Radford was bad, but I thought his performance of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was great. Anyone who was around for the war that was Jon Stevens remembers I hate crooners, but I like David. I like that he was doing his own thing, not trying to imitate anyone. Randy didn't like him, thought it was like David was acting. Randy thought he had no originality (has Randy heard Queen's version?), and the voice wasn't that great. Paula said the kitty pound loved David. She thought he had tremendous charisma. Simon went more along with Randy, saying it came over as a bit of a joke. He did feel the audience would like him though. He gave him the advice to take himself more seriously, which I think David should do a little bit more of in the future, but not too much. A little silliness is fine.
Bucky Covington fans should be happy they weren't in my living room, listening to my husband and my niece go on about him. They were not complimentary. Personally, I don't like him either, but I don't think he's that bad. His version of "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd was okay, but then again I detest Lynyrd Skynyrd. I think Bucky is a poor version of Bo Bice (not that I liked Bo that much either). Randy told him he did the south proud. He also told him to not push it too hard. Paula thought he picked a good song. Simon likes that he is very raw, but said there are thousands of bars across America where you'll find someone like Bucky.
Will Makar sang "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5 very well. I liked that he wasn't trying to be Michael Jackson, but just having fun and being himself. Randy was entertained. Paula stole my line, saying he reminded her of Bobby Brady. Simon wasn't impressed, he thought it was just okay, but honestly that's almost a compliment from Simon isn't it?
Jose "Sway" Penala's version of "Reasons" by Earth Wind & Fire was pretty much ignorable, until that one note made me pay attention and stop making fun of his Dad. He definitely did not get rhythm from his Dad.Randy thought it was pitchy in spots, but had range and originality. Paula liked that he went above the highest falsetto and nailed it. Simon thought it was just a pimpy third rate copy of Earth Wind & Fire.
Darn that Chris Daughtry, why can't he make me dislike him? I keep right on trying to not like him, but he keeps getting better. One of the best performances tonight, his version of "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi was awesome. All three judges liked him, with Randy telling him he's got a great recording voice. Simon heard someone with potential for the first time tonight out of him. He told him to start believing in himself and showing more charisma.
I finally figured out who Kevin Covais reminds me of. He reminds me of Ross Perot. His performance of "One Last Cry" was kind of nice. I keep getting distracted by his blinking though. And he constantly has a surprised look on his face. Randy liked him and thought the performance was "the bomb." Paula just gushed and gushed. Simon was mean and said it was vocally on the verge of excrutiating
Gedeon McKinney was a nice surprise. His performance of "Shout" was a wonderful high energy performance with loads of personality. It was exactly what he needed as he didn't get much, if any, airtime prior to this episode. Randy and Paula were both surprised by the performance. Randy was about to get up, and Paula said she did. Simon, as usual, was unimpressed. He said it was like watching the warmup for the Chippendales (trust me Simon, the Chippendales need no warmup act). He added that Gedeon's smile bothers him, and I know where's he's coming from there. But Gedeon seems to be a genuinely happy type of guy, so I don't think we'll get rid of that smile anytime soon.
Elliott Yamin doesn't do any warmups before performing, he says. His performance of "If You Really Love Me" was nice. He has a nice voice but I don't see what the judges were so over the top about. Randy thought it was brilliant. Paula called him infectious (then again so is ebola). Simon was just completely over the top, calling Elliott potentially the best male vocalist they've ever had in the competition.
Bobby Bennett's performance of "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow was very fun. I think he's an entertaining guy. Randy and Paula also liked the entertainment value of it. Randy pointed out that vocally it was just alright. Paula likes that he commits 100%. Simon likes him, but thought it was a complete nightmare. Ryan Seacrest then asks Simon what Bobby can work on to improve, and this leads to a nice long exchange between the two. I agree with Ryan, the contestants have made it this far, they deserve some constructive criticism, and not just "it was a nightmare." Don't get me wrong, I adore Simon, but I hope the judges are giving the contestants more comments off camera that will help them improve, rather than just bringing them down.
I'm not a smoker, but I definitely needed a cigarette after Ace Young's performance of "Father Figure." Wow does that boy have "it." Randy was laughing while Ace was singing. He said the reason he was laughing was that Ace was working the camera, but he's definitely a star, and he can really sing. I think Paula needed a cigarette too, she looked like she was in love. If ever I would believe her having an affair with a contestant, this is the one. Simon tossed in a plug for his other show "X Factor" by telling Ace that he has the X Factor.
Closing the show was Taylor Hicks with his performance of "Levon." I thought it was a good choice for him, but Randy didn't like the song choice. Paula loves his passion and told him that he loves what he does. Simon admitted he was wrong when he said that Taylor shouldn't be in the finals. He now things he's interesting, and into his singing.
Picking a top three tonight is not hard at all tonight:
Ace Young (who could have stood on the stage and done nothing and would still make it to the top three)
Gedeon McKinney (for being so wonderfully entertaining)
Chris Daughtry (no matter how much I want to dislike him)
By the way, David Radford just barely missed my top three, even if he is a crooner.
The bottom is a little bit rougher for me to pick. I would start by placing Bucky Covington firmly in the bottom three. Then I would reluctantly place Patrick Hall in the bottom (but I hope he escapes. I know he's got a great voice in him). The last spot goes to Kevin Covais, even if his performance was okay.
As for who I would like to see go, I think Bucky is out this week. Gedeon didn't get much exposure, but I think his performance managed to pull him through. Patrick may be in danger, the same for Kevin simply because I don't think their performances were the greatest. As long as Ace makes it into the top 12, I'll be perfectly happy. Hopefully he'll be in the top 2, and I'll get to see a lot more of him.
I have high doubts at Bucky's IQ. He doesn't look intelligent at all (to me). His behaviour is just off and it's like he's not there completely mentally.
As you could have read in the article, I was making fun of Sway's dad because the dad would look at his wife, see when she would clap, and he would clap very closely behind it, clearly showing that he didn't have any feeling for any rythm at all.
I finally figured out of whom Gedeon reminds me off: George Huff, George was smiling all the time too.
I was greatly entertained by the males, their vocals might have been lower than those of the girls this week, however the guys were more entertaining.
My Bottom 3 for the guys are : Kevin, Elliott and Bucky. With Bucky securely at the bottom.
Wow. This show was terrible. You had the bad (Patrick, Kevin), the generic (Bucky, Chris), the puzzling (Sway, Gedeon, Bobby), And the preposterous (David, Will). Simon was right on. AI has lost their minds. He was right about everything else too. Now where was I. Oh yea, the good (Elliott, Ace), and the amazing (Taylor).
ps. I thought Stevie well established yesterday that using the phrase "Bring it" was uncool.
i have a comment i love your website but however i dissagree with you choose i like bucky and i love elliott he was my favorite ever sence i saw him. he has a great personailly and a great voice . my top three was chris, david, elliott and my bottom three was bobby, jose"sway", and gedoen. but i like your site i just wanted ya'll to know who i liked
I will see the performance in 11 hours – well almost! But I can never be patient and I read your post as soon as you post it! I could not resist posting because there were few things that cracked me up!
I finally figured out who Kevin Covais reminds me of. He reminds me of Ross Perot.
Oh shoot! ROFLPIMPLMAO! Jesus! That was the highlight of 2006! You do realize you ruined Kevin for me forever! You are so right! Man this guy has got so many look-alike analyses, but none so funnily accurate!
I'm not a smoker, but I definitely needed a cigarette after Ace Young's performance of "Father Figure." Wow does that boy have "it."
Here! Puff away!
Oh man I am good! I knew it! Sorry Dusty! Should I be scared that I know your fantasy types without even knowing what you look like? I knew you’d go gaga about this one because if anyone liked Constantine – the same bunch would root for Ace! I think Ace is better looking though and that’s my opinion but then I don’t really know how to actually checkout any guy! He sang Father Figure? I am already impressed! I love that song!
More after I see the show!
The Core Of Man's Spirit Comes From New Experiences!
Gedeon McKinney and NOT Taylor?? You must have watched a different AI tonight than the rest of us! Taylor has more talent in his left hand than Gedeon has in his whole body. Gedeon will not make the final 12 and I'm willing to bet you Taylor makes it to the last 6 for sure!!
I really liked Kevin Covais like RANDY said he was the bomb, i beleave everyone has the right to there own opinion but i DEFINATELY DISAGREE with how Simon voted and how Simion RATED Kevin's prformace's tonite, the 22nd of feb. Kevin keep on the good work, no matter what SIMION says Kevin your the BOMP keep up the good work, and i really enjoyed the last song u just sang on AMERICAN IDOL witch was ONE LAST CRY. I LOVED your PERFORMANCE.
First of all, its not Bobby Brady,he was the little kid on the show. It was Peter Brady that he looks like.
Or maybe even better an 18 year old Donnie Osmond.
Nice performance, though.
I like Ace and Joe Cocker II to get the most votes from tonight and Sway and Bobby for the exits.
Bobby was entertaining, but not much of a voice.
Overall, nice variety in the acts, should be fun to watch.
Chris, Taylor and Ace were very, very good. Elliot is very talented but needs to get his teeth fixed. I am not trying to be rude; he just truly needs some dental assistance to be on TV. The others were average--especially, Bobby--that poor thing was just a mess. I am not sure how he got this far. Ace is hot and talented and Chris is hot and talented. Taylor is not hot but very talented and very likeable. I don't have much to say about the girls except the little 16 year old was really good and that weird, skinny opera singer is one strange nut and not as good (or hot for that matter) as she thinks she is. One more wink in the camera and I just might lose it.
I love that everyone is just all over the place on the guys, while with the girls there is agreement over who is good. I think the reason for that is just that the guys weren't that WOW, while the girls were WOW. The only guys that people seem to agree on are Ace and Chris (and generally Taylor).
Here are some of my additional thoughts on the guys:
Taylor - I like him, but I'm just not as wild about him as certain people are. I have grey hairs and I can have a seizure when I sing, will that make me great too?
Elliott - why oh why are people so wild about him? Can someone who likes him explain it to me? Sure he's a good singer, but I didn't think he was awesome like a lot of people obviously did. No, it's not his looks putting me off, even if I close my eyes I still don't get it.
Here would be my top 6 guys based upon what I saw yesterday:
Ace - My fiancee loves him for his looks alone. He is the Constantine (sans butt chin and five years) physical clone.
Chris - The Constantine vocal clone, only ten times better. Has a great Nickelback-type sound, thought Nickelback is so three years ago.
Taylor - He is a Joe Cocker/Ray Charles wannabe, but still has originality that makes him interesting to watch. I think the blue hairs adore him.
Elliot - Looks like a Mr. Peepers had a son. He totally needs an image makeover. Great pipes though.
Will - Has a great likeability and looks like Fred Savage. He will appeal to the pre teens with his Boy-next-door quality.
Gedeon - He is a throwback to a great soul era and an original. There has to be one R&B male in the Final 12, right?
Patrick - Boring. I did not watch the Las Vegas auditions, so this is the second time I have seen him perform. Zzzz.
David - He had too many funky facial contortions. It is not good when you have to loosen your jaw and let it wooble just to get a little vibrato.
Bucky - The poor man's Bo. He'll make it to the men's final 8, maybe.
Sway - This guy can sing and may sneak into the Final 12. However, he is too unlikeable. I still cannot believe he is still on the show since he is in a boy band (unless he quit and I didn't read about it).
Kevin - Has the personality of a turnip. He looked like he crapped himself while he was on stage. Vote him off now and spare him the delusions of stardom.
Bobby - Fun to watch, but not for this show. He would be a great lounge act in Vegas.
I haven't been able to properly leave this message, so I'm leaving it here so everyone can be aware that my calls/votes were being blocked ALL night. I too agree that Ace Young was fabulous, as was Chris Daughtry & Taylor Hicks. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to vote for anyone because I kept rec'ing an electronic message: "I'm sorry, your call can not be completed because the number you are trying to reach is out of your calling area". Um, it's an 800 # & it worked just fine last night calling for the ladies...
OK here goes..., I will try not to be rude but honest in my opinion.
Best voice of the night was probably Elliot Yamin, unfortunately his looks are best suited for radio. Ace was a very close second, but since he has the looks and the "X" factor, that would put him in front.
The worst, Kevin Covais, he doesn't look so much as Ross Perot, but more like Scott Savol and Anthony Federov's love child. (I know that's not possible, but we can all dream, can't we?). I actually had to close my eyes to listen to him, because his looks were too distracting. Although, he didn't seem to make any major mistakes, he's just so 1 dimensional and more suited to maybe singing at church socials.
And second would be Bucky, for all the reasons that were already mentioned in other comments.
And yes, in the entertainment industry, looks do count.

Wow the guys were weak overall, compared to the girls, it is a shame they have to cut 6 girls, really! The Super pretty boy was good and taylor but I just wasn't impressed, they seemed nervous to me, I guess the girls scared them!
This old lady loves Taylor! he reminds me of the music of my day that young people love too.Ottis Redding. Ray charles,Stevie wonder, etc. Oh for the people who doubt his age, he really is 29. And he's a good guy!!
Bobby needs to go. So does Sway. They are definitely the least talented.
Taylor, Chris, Ace and David are the best. David is an awesome crooner and needs to stick to that genre. Taylor is the most unique performer since Fantasia and is awesome! Chris has a powerful voice and needs to develop his self confidence. He will go far. Ace - *sigh*. What a hottie. He sounds like Justin Timberlake and definitely has "it". He is this year's Constantine.
