Tonight on American Idol, we got our first look at the top 12 girls getting to really do their thing. Some of the names we had been looking forward to, like Paris and Lisa, while others we were wondering who they are. Overall it was an excellent show, with only a few smudges here and there. The guys are going to have a tough act to follow tomorrow night - I do not envy them.
First up was Mandisa Hunley performing "Never" by Heart. She said she wanted to show that "sisters can rock too" and she certainly showed that. She may be big, but she's got loads of personality and energy when she's performing. I still love her. Randy Jackson thought it was a great way to show off her personality and a good start to the show. Paula thought she was phenomenal. Simon Cowell was nice and polite, telling her that the vocal wasn't perfect, but she has an unbelievable personality. He thinks she'll make it through to the finals and I agree. Ryan Seacrest asked her about the understanding she has with Simon now. Mandisa replied that she and Simon have a relationship, they're practically dating.
Kellie Pickler said that sharing her *sob* story was hard for her. I'm still trying to dislike her on principle, but she sang "How Far" by Martina McBride very well. She was off in spots, I think because she tried too hard. I'm still trying to dislike her for the sob story thing, but she's got a decent voice. I think she can shape into a true talent. Randy thought it was good, but not her best. Paula likes that she doesn't have the "diva attitude." Simon felt it was off at the end, but it felt sincere and heartfelt. Ryan asked her about her nerves and Kellie said she was really nervous.
Becky O'Donohue chose "Because the Night" because it was the first CD she ever got. It was a nice performance, and I still like her. I just wasn't as blown away as I expected. The song just doesn't really support that. Randy loved the performance even though she's not the best voice. She gets into what she's doing. Paula told Becky that her charm and the way she commands the stage is her magic. There were notes off, but Paula tells her to remember that she doesn't have to overperform or oversing. Simon thought it was slightly better than he expected, but he also thinks that good isn't enough anymore.
Poor Ryan had to get a box to stand on to talk to Ayla Brown, just so he could feel more manly. She chose to sing "Reflection" and I loved it. The judges were all going on about how surprised they were, but I knew she had it in her. She's got an awesome voice, and truly showed some emotion with this one. Randy didn't expect it to be that good, but it was good he said. Paula agreed with Randy. Simon called her a hard worker, but there are limits to where her voice can go. He was impressed that she showed some emotion though. Honestly I normally agree with Simon, but I take exception to his "there are limits" comment. There are limits to every singer's voice. Even the best singer in the known universe has a limit to his or her voice, so I don't feel that is a valid argument. The best singers know where their limits are and work with that.
The eagerly awaited Paris Bennett sang "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight and the Pips. She has truly awesome stage presence for someone her age. She owned that stage like she's been doing it all her life. Vocally it wasn't as WOW as I expected, but combined with the stage presence it made for a wonderful performance. Randy was surprised at the moving and grooving. Paula thought she was a firecracker and the energizer bunny, and she avoided a wardrobe malfunction all at the same time. Simon told her that she just showed everyone how to do it. She has the likeability factor going for her as well.
Stevie Scott might be unique because she's trained in opera, but that didn't stop her from blowing her song. Her version of "To Where You Are" was supposed to be very falsetto and weird, I think. It was weird, but she sounded off key the whole time. The judges definitely were not impressed. Randy was daydreaming because it didn't capture his attention. Paula tried to say it was brave to sing it in falsetto. Simon disagreed with Paula and agreed with Randy. He compared it to a child getting up to sing out of tune.
Sassy Brenna Gethers decided to show America her softer side with "You Are the Sunshine of my Life" by Stevie Wonder. It just didn't feel right, she was off and didn't even seem to be in the right rhythm. The judges all seemed to want to see the sassy Brenna. Randy felt it was too safe. Paula thought it was too safe. Simon wants her to be who she is a wild little cat. He felt like someone put gloves on her. Ryan points out that Brenna and Simon are so alike because they were born on the same day, just in different centuries.
Heather Cox did not do so good with her performance of "When You Tell Me That You Love Me." She was a bit off throughout the song. Randy thought she would pick a song that would slay everyone, but it was boring and pitchy. Paula agreed with Randy, that it was not a great performance. Simon was even less nice, he called it horrible, safe, and forgettable.
Melissa McGhee sang "When the Lights go Down" by Faith Hill. She honestly didn't have the power in her voice to give that song what it needed. Beyond that, she was terribly off. Randy thought it started rough and had pitch problems but she pulled it off. He thought it showed that she has a good voice. Paula thought it was a shining moment for her, that she has a sexy sultry voice.Simon was in the middle. He thought it was interesting, but he wouldn't remember her before she sang tonight.
Lisa Tucker stole the show with her performance of "I Am Changing." For another young female, she's also got awesome presence and emotion. Every now and then I heard an off note, but she came right back. She was completely wonderful. Randy thought it started rough but she worked it out. Paula called her a precious gift. Simon said that she makes girls who are 5 or 6 years older look ordinary
Kinnik Sky performed a nice version of "Get Here" by Oleta Adams. I thought it was a very nice performance, but the judges were just not impressed. Randy thought it was rough at the beginning, but gave it a 6. Paula told her she looked stunning, but had a few sharp notes. Simon doesn't think the problem is the voice, the problem is that there were some great peformances from the younger girls. He thinks she's being overshadowed by the younger singers. Kinnik says she's willing to learn, even from the young ones.
Last up was Katharine McPhee, who ended the show very well with "Since I Fell for You." She also has nice stage presence and a great voice. I loved that she put her own spin on the song. Randy called her one of the natural talents in the competition. Paula called it a great performance. Simon thought she was the best of the vocalists tonight.
I disagree with some comments from the judges tonight. I don't understand why the judges are so against Ayla Brown. Every time I hear her sing she gives me goosebumps. Add her wonderful personality to that and I think she's every bit the star that Paris, Lisa, and Katharine are. As for Kinnik, I think she's a wonderful elegant singer. It's nice to have some classy older talent in the competition. And I just adore Mandisa. She's got a great personality and a great voice. With so many excellent performances tonight, it's hard to pick a top, so I'll start with my bottom 3.
In the past, it's not necessarily the worst performers that go off, but the ones who fail to connect. For that reason, I think Heather and Melissa are more in danger tonight than any of the others.
There is no way I can narrow the top performers down to three. Mandisa rocked, Kinnik showed class, Lisa, Paris, and Katharine showed excellent stage presence and vocals, and Ayla just blows me away with her voice. Becky and Kellie were more "middle of the road" for me, while Brenna only barely managed to escape my bottom three. I'm going to have difficulty going down to the top 6 girls with this group! I can't wait to see what the guys come up with tomorrow.
Not thrilled with Brenna...Being a bronx girl myself...she needs to back off the attitude. Shes giving Mt Vernon a bad rap!! Her voice wouldnt be so bad if she just sang, regular..and stopped with all that over singing.
I hope Kelly Pickler does well int he next round...and of course...I like Lisa and Paris. Mandisa does rock...shes got a great attitude too!!
I thought that Mandisa, Ayla, Lisa, and Katherine were the best of the night!
Kinnick was a pleasant surprise and I thought the judges were a little hard on her. She was clearly the best of the "unheards"
I think I am going to have issues with Paris. Yes, she's cute and very talented, but I think she will begin to get on my nerves. She reminds me a little too much of Fantasia. And her high pitched voice that only sometimes comes out is beginning to grate on me. She's very good, but it will be interesting to see how she does once theme weeks begin.
Becky O'Donahue is just a pretty face to me. I couldn't stand her singing last night and there's just something about her that comes accross to me as fake. I hope she doesn't make the top 12. There are other far better than her.
Katherine definitely has the best voice and is the whole package as well, looks personality, stage presence. I think Lisa is adorable but not as strong vocally. Mandisa is excellent, but Paris while full of personality does not have the best voice. Ayla is not getting the credit she deserves.
It is always interesting to see how we can all watch the same show and come away with diferent opinions as to how our favorite contestants performed!! Let us respect each others' opinions. It is just that: An opinion.
First of all I think (my opinion) that overall it was a good show. Six very good performances, three middle-of-the road, and three bad ones.
The top six in order of appearance:
Middle of the road:
Since only two can be eliminated, please let it be Brenna and any other one. I just cannot stand that young lady's attitude. She forgot the first rule: You must have talent to backup attitude!!
Kinnick was perhaps the most under-acknowledged performer last night. She demonstrated class and maturity. I am not saying she gave the best performance, just she wasn't given her props.
The guys will have a hard time matching the intensity of last night's show. Lookig forward to the discussion here tomorrow!!
When I listened to this group I tried to figure out which of the contestants people would pay to see, and the only one so far is Lisa. I thought she had a strong, clean voice that carried the song, and the others had weaker performances by comparision.
Many think Paris is great but i see her as having a forgettable voice, I couldn't pick out her voice in a crowd other than it is very loud, there is nothing unique about it. She performed well but the song was very old and bland, I don't see any teens connecting with her.
Lisa also was very old for her age to be fair, I think this is a problem the younger singers have each year. Still Lisa was the best tonight, the others need to get to her level or they won't last.
I think Randy was right that the males are much better this year, anyway we will see tonight.
Am I the only person who does NOT like Ayla?? Maybe it is a prejudice against the whole rich kid, daddy buys her everything deal --- but give me a break already, she is too perfect, not spark, no personality - that is something you can't buy - no matter what part of the government your daddy runs, ask Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton. The voice is ok - not great.
Mandisa I love - she is personality everywhere!! Confidence and talent too! the WHOLE package - in super size at that! She is gorgeous!
Paris - how can anyone compare her to Fantasia? Tasia was all atitude and mouth? This little girl is so humble and charming. Honestly though, with a heritage in music like she has, I don't know why she is wasting her time in AI and why her Grandma didn't just call up a few old friends and say take a listen to my "grandbaby" -- she is amazing! I don't think her song choice was the best last night - but she still outsang the vast majority of the competition... in that respect I guess she is like Fantasia.
Lisa - that child is so classy! She has so much talent. I can't wait to see how she develops as the competition progresses.
Kinnik - WOW! She is so elegant. Yeah, a few missed notes - but overall, regal and a complete class act. She might be able to learn from the babies in the group, but they can learn alot from her in the areas of grace, elegance and class.
Katherine - I wasn't THAT impressed... yeah, she was good. But I must have missed the sparkle somewhere - maybe it got lost in the Grits?? You know - I am from Memphis, and a girl and her grits .... well ....
Kellie - I adore this girl - have from the first time they showed her. I cried over her sob story. It is such a reality for so many girls stuck in rural areas and small towns in the south that I want her to win for every single one who didn't have a chance to .... so she hasn't shown the best voice yet in Hollywood. Nerves have her tied up tight - but hopefully she will get her earthquake proof legs under her and settle in and start having fun with it all and show off her stuff .... there are worse places she could wind up besides Nashville...
Becky - can we trade her in for the other twin and see if we get a better model?? Looks aren't everthing - TALENT is .... and she ain't got it ....
Melissa - wait, I gotta go see who this is again - I don't remember her ....(playing theme from Jeopardy ....) oh yeah, slept through her last night too .... not bad enough to vote out, not good enough to register either ..
Stevie - dye her hair jet black and she would make a GREAT vampiress - am I right or not?? the voice is different, ina wierd way - and that isn't necessarily bad - I think in the right stuff it would work great - last night wasn't the right stuff ... but she could do the whole Enya genre and be incredible ...
Heather - who? ok - be right back, checking Curlio's comments again (..............) Ok, even THAT didn't help jog my memory - I STILL don't remember her .... I am seriously going to have to take a No-Doz before I watch the show tonight - maybe the guys will be better ....
Brenna - Brenna - Brenna --- does she remind anyone else of the obnoxious, loudmouthed, Barbara Streisand wannabe-Simon's promdate from last season? What was her name?? Yeah - I figure I won't remember Brenna's name this time next year either ... there has to be some comic relief each year - ha ha ha - let's find an idol now. Get serious people. We don't need to make "good television" --- we need to some beautiful music ....
speaking of beautiful - - the guys are tonight - YEAH BABY!! (let's see what my Memphis Boy does to redeem the reputation of my town after the Brattynum twins whined their way across national tv the past two months ...
later people - and Curlio - thanks for all your hard work and your dedication to American Idol - this forum is a blast to read and follow and contribute to.
MemphisMomma - out
I don't get the love for Paris, she is a cute nice littel girl but she will sing at gospel festivals, she will never fill an arena!
Vocals off, off, off, she looks like a 13 year old playing grown-up! More like star search juniors?? Or, singing chipmunks!
RIRSTLY I AM FROM JAMAICA, MCPHEE, LISA, KELLIE I LOVE THOSE GIRLS NOT SAYING I DONT LIKE THE OTHERS KINNIK SHE'S ELEGANT WHY I AM NOT FEELING PARIS IS THATS SHE IS FROM A FAMILY WITH CELEBRITY I DONT THINK THATS FAIR BECAUSE THATS WHY SHE'S GOING TO GET VOTES I DONT SAY I DONT LIKE HER IS JUST THAT AM NOT FEELING HER
I think you're pretty on target with your bottom three and why they'll be there.
I would have to add Brenna Gethers as well. But I think she'll skate through because people want to see her personality come out more in a more appropriate song.
Reminds me of the Fran Dresher wannabe from last year, who lasted far too long.
Lisa reminds me of a very young Natalie Cole and should go far.
Beckie has a mini scandal evolving from a Maxim photo shoot. Did pretty well.
I think Katharine, Lisa, Mandisa and Paris had the best performances but like the style of Kinnik and think the audience will push Kellie through for awhile on personality. If she can overcome nervousness, she may surprise some people.
I AM FROM JAMAICA CARRIE UNDERWOOD IS MY GIRL.
KELLY CLARKSON I LOVE HER BUT I THINK SHE SHOULD REMEMBER WHERE SHE CAME FROM MOST PEOPLE ARE UNGRATEFUL I DONT LIKE HER ATTITUTE TOWARDS IDOL. IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLAY WHO WON AND NOT RUBEN AM BLACK BUT I THINK CLAY SHOULD HAVE WON. FANTASIA ROCKS SHE DESERVES IT PARIS IS TRYING TO IMITATE FANTASHIA BY THE WAY SHE MOVES.
CARRIE IS STILL MY GIRL THROUGH THE ROCKY ROAD
i hate melissa hear this.
'American Idol' contestant Melissa McGhee is upset because she feels she's gotten less face time than her peers. But she's making up for that shortcoming by using her cell phone incessantly to vote for herself.
and will sud not of left, he shud of stayed. all the ppl left are kinda stupid. take taylor and take bucky.
well any way, thats how i feel.
