American Idol contestants this week had to sing songs from this century. Apparently the rules for it were very loosely enforced.
Before the contestants got the chance to prove to the viewers that they should be in the top 6 for next week we got a performance of the six contestants from the top 11 that got voted off already. The performance was bismal and they sounded horrible together.
The first contestant, Scotty McCreery decided to sing Leann Rimes' cover of "Swingin'". The problem I had with this choice is that it was a cover from John Anderson that released the song in 1983. The style that Scotty was singing was exactly that from John Anderson, Not that from Leann on top of that the lyrics that Scotty was singing was about a girl, and you guessed it; John sang about a girl, Leann didn't, she changed the lyrics to sing about a boy (of course). Scotty had a great voice as usual, but he should be in the bottom three for just plain cheating. None of the judges mentioned these facts, Steven said it was good and that he liked it. Jennifer Lopez said she wasn't sure about his performance and that he should be pushing himself more. Randy said it was too safe and therefor too boring.
James Durbin, the second performer of the night decided to sing a song from Muse; "Uprising". At the beginning of the song he came out with a several drumband drummers. It was as usual a great performance and great vocal from James. Jennifer said she would go out on a limb and call it the best theatrically performance of the night. And also mentioned that it was the highest that we have heard James sing thus far. Randy said that the song is an amazing song and that he likes Muse and that he did a great job on it. he also added that he should stay on the course he is heading. He also predicted that it would be the best performance of the night. Steven said: "You stay out of my closet! It's very expensive to look this cheap!" He also said the performance was crazy good.
The first of the two girls to perform was Haley Reinhart. She decided to sing the song "Rolling in the deep" from Adelle. I felt that she was slightly off with singing but she had a decent voice but it certainly wasn't her best performance that we have seen from her. Randy Jackson said that it was a perfect direction for her, but that there were some sharp notes at times but that it was overall a great performance. Steven said it was a great performance and that it was beautiful. Jennifer said that it takes lots of guts to take on a song that everyone knows so well because it is an album that is selling very well.
Jacob Lusk decided to sing a Luther Van Dross song; "Dance with my father" He apparently lost his father when he was young and the song meant a lot to him. When he started singing he made a mistake and shortly after that he pulled his earpiece out. Afterwards we got to hear that the feedback through the earpiece was off and that that was the reason why he stumbled at the beginning and pulled it out. It was a good performance though and you could certainly see that he put emotion in his performance. Steven Tyler called him Luther Lusk and told him that he was soo good. He mentioned that Jacob stumbled at the beginning but that he pulled through. Jennifer's opinion was it is hard to sing a song if a song meants that much for him but that that's what an entertainer just needs to do. She called it an emotionally beautiful song. Randy agreed and that it was good but that it didn't make him jump up and down. He also mentioned that he should use his runs of his voice more often.
The next contestant would sing Maroon 5's "Harder to Breathe". Casey Abrams also decided to play the guitar. I felt that he made the start and the end his own, it was a good entertaining performance at the end he went soft and ended up giving Jennifer a kiss on her cheek. Jennier said "Casey got soft lips!" Steven interupted and mentioned that casey did what he tried to do for four months. Jennifer said; "I loved it. THE PERFORMANCE! THE PERFORMANCE!". Randy said he always loves suprises and Casey always does that every week. He said that he always keeps taking chances and that he did an amazing job. Steven said that Casey was already a cult hero. And called him f*ing good.
The worst performance of the night was of course given by Stefano Langone. he decided to do a cheap performance of Ne-Yo's "Closer". It was clear that Stefano is far below par compared to the other contestants. It was just an ok performance to me it also felt karaoke. Randy apparently disagreed with me as he said that it was definately not karaoke (Did he read my mind?). He also said that he did a very good thing turning around and putting himself back into the competition. All that Steven said was "Good JOb.". Jennifer lopez said that it was very very good and that it felt like a concert and that it also felt like a real performance.
The last performance was by the second girl that is left; Lauren Alaina. She decided to sing "Born To Fly" by Sara Evans. It was a good performance and she definately has a future in country music. Steven said that she is soo good naturally. Jennifer said she has a special voice and so much character and that she needs to believe more in herself and that she can sing high notes like the other contestants. Randy said that she could sing anything. He called it a cool performance and that he agreed with Jennifer and that she just should challenge herself.
The three people I would put in the bottom would be Stefano Langone for the worst performance of the night, Haley Reinhart for the token girl in the bottom three and Scotty McCreery for cheating on his choice selection, by singnig John Anderson's tune and lyrics, and neither the tune or lyrics from Leann Rimes that he was supposedly singing.
