This week's theme was the songs of the silver screen.
Ryan Seacrest started the show by mentioning that Jennifer Lopez has been announced as the most beautiful woman in the world by People Magazine. And clearly during the night they were on a high on the word "beautiful" as they would keep using it all night long.
The first contestant this week was the contestant that closed last week; Paul McDonald. This week the guest mentor was Will.I.Am. He decided to sing "Old Town Rock N Roll" from Bob Seger. It was very entertaining, but as usual he did have a few pitch issues. Steven Tyler said that he liked it and that Paul is an entertainer. Jennifer said that she noriced that he gets further each week as an artist. Randy was very original by repeating Steven that Paul definately is an entertainer.
The second contestant was one of the last two girls; Lauren Alaina. She decided to sing Miley Cyrus's "The Climb". She had a good performance but had a sharp note during her performance. Jennifer Lopez said she loved eharing her sing that song and that she sang it beautiful. Randy said that that Lauren sang it like the song was written for her. Steven said that he loves to hear what she brings to a song and what a song brings to her, he called the performance just Beautiful and that it moved him beyond tears.
The second guy singing was Stefano Langone. He sang the song "End Of The Road". He sang it well, but that's what it was, he didn't perform, he sang. He didn't dress the part either, it was like someone just walked out of the audience and they put him on the stage. Randy Jackson said it was the best vocal of Stefano to date. Steven said he proved tonight why he was there and that it was not the end of the road for him. Jennifer called the lousy performance a great performance.
Contestant four was Scotty McCreery and sang "Across My Heart". During his performance it felt that at some point he lost the words or he was just uncertain about his words and it sounded like he was mumbling. It was a great country performance, although he was a bit off-key at the end of the song. Steven said that he loved his voice and that his choice was the right choice. Jennifer said that all the guys are "so darn good" and that he performed Beautifully. Randy said that he loved the song choice for Scotty.
Casey Abrams was the next contestant. He wanted to sing "Nature Boy", but Jimmy Irvene didn't like that choice and wanted Casey to do "In The Air Tonight" after considering what song he would sing he decided to stick to his guns and sing "Nature Boy". Though normally it's unwise to ignore a mentor's advice, in my opinion in this case it was the smart thing to do as he gave a great performance. While he got a standing ovation from the audience and from the judges you could hear Steven yell "ENCORE!". Jennifer said that she was nevous at the beginning and said she hoped that america would get the great performance. Randy said it was a grammy kind of performance and that he embraced what he is; Brilliant! Steven told Casey that he is an artist and that he does what he feels in his heart.
The other girl was the next contestant. Haley Reinhart decided to sing "Call Me" by Debbie Harry also known as Blondie. It was very entertaining and it was very clear that she was having fun on stage. Randy said he didn't like the beginning and that it sounded karaoke at the start. Which of course is no wonder as it's a popular song to be sung as karaoke. Steven agreed with Randy but said that it's all about the chorus and that she nailed that one. He also added a compliment on the sparkly dress that she was wearing. Jennifer said that she loved the wailing at the end but that it wasn't the best performance.
The second from the last performance was given by Jacob Lusk. Jimmy again disagreed with the contestant about the song choices and suggested that Jacob should sing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" As usual he had a great voice, but the performance itself was yet again very boring. Steven called it Phenomonal and increddible. Jennifer said that he was a gifted vocalist and that he gave her the chills at the end of the song. Randy said that he believes Jacob when he sings and that it was very controlled.
The last contestant, James Durbin, heard from Jimmy Irvene that his choice was bad too, however like Casey, James decided to do his own choice as well, but unlike Casey he didn't even consider it. He had his heart set on the song. He decided to sing Sammy Hagar's "Heavy Metal". When he came out the guitarist with him was Jakk Wylde. Which I felt like American Idol was somehow cheating as the other contestants didn't get a settled artist like Jakk with them. The performance was great though I don't think it was the right choice and that america didn't get into his performance. Jennifer Lopez said that she really loved it. Randy mentioned that Jakk was one of the greatest guitarists ever and that James did James. Steven called the performance outstanding.
My guess for the bottom three would have to be in no particular order:
Stefano Langone, Lauren Alaina and James Durbin. My hope is that Stefano will be the one sent home.
Obviously you are NOT a fan of Rock music as James sang a Sammy Hagar (not Hagard) song and it was Zakk Wylde (not Jakk Wilde) who played with him. Anyway, James Durbin is hands down one of the best (if not the best) on the show. Not only does he have a great "Rock" voice, he also takes control of the stage (none of the other contestants come close), and has an incredible back story to boot (Father of a 2 year old and James is overcoming Tourette syndrome and autism). You are crazy to think he'll be in the bottom 3.
Welcome to Auto-Spelling Correction, didn't even notice that it did that. Thanks (and I fixed it.)
Yes, I think James is one of the best this season, I just didn't think Heavy Metal would gather that many votes with the average American Idol audience.
For I am the dust!
